We Are Not Sheep

VICAR

Dear Readers, I wish you a happy and peaceful Sunday, as ever.

Since lambing season is well and truly upon us, this week I would like to draw your attention to sheep.

In the Bible we Christians are often referred to as sheep. But let us not be confused by what we see in the green fields of this United Kingdom and how we should be as human beings. Being corralled by a sheep dog is not the same as being preached to by a Vicar. Waking up in the morning is not the same as waking up and thinking “grass, grass, grass”.

Being sheep of the church does not mean you cannot be rebels. It does not mean you have to lose your idiosyncrasies and conform like brainless zombies to whatever the Bible or the Pope or the Archbishop of Canterbury says. No. Far from it.

As humans we have choice and free will. Use them. Do not be like sheep. Do not be fooled into thinking that Christianity is some form of social cement.

I hope this message is clear to those of you who think that to be a member of a Christian church means having a flip-top head and pads on your knees for all the praying and kneeling you’ll have to do. Not at all.

You are free. Feel blessed and free this Sunday.

I promise the Editorial team a weekly prayer. God bless. Here it is:

Good Morning God!
You are ushering in another day,
untouched and freshly new.
So here I am to ask you, God,
if You’ll renew me too.

Forgive the many errors that I made yesterday
and let me try again dear God
to walk closer in Your way.

But Lord, I am well aware,
I can’t make it on my own.
So take my hand and hold it tight,
for I cannot walk alone.
