A Prayer for the Jealous

Listen to this article

VICAR

Dear Readers of Country Squire Magazine, I trust that You are healthy and well.

This week let us consider the jealous. They live among us. These people may be jealous of looks, youth, wealth, bravery or they may be mentally ill, self-hating types. It is sad how they tie themselves in knots about their shortcomings and failures, needing to project their bitterness on others.

They should turn to the Bible which addresses jealousy in various contexts, often highlighting its negative effects and encouraging believers to embrace love and contentment instead. Here are a few key verses:

Galatians 5:19-21 – In this passage, jealousy is listed among the acts of the flesh, which can lead to separation from God’s kingdom: “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy.”

James 3:16 – “For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” This verse highlights how jealousy can lead to chaos and negativity in relationships and communities.

1 Corinthians 13:4 – “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” Here, jealousy (envy) is contrasted with the nature of true love, urging believers to cultivate loving relationships.

Overall, the Bible encourages individuals to embrace love, gratitude, and contentment rather than succumbing to feelings of jealousy. Just because You quit and others were brave enough to continue is no excuse for You to smear them. Just because You look like last week’s leftovers doesn’t give You the right to try to undo beauty. Just because You are a nobody does not give You the right to try to pull others down.

Have a good week. God bless You all.

Dear Lord,

In Your presence, we come seeking healing for our hearts. When jealousy creeps in, remind us of Your abundant love and the unique path You have laid out for each of us. Help us to turn our envy into gratitude, appreciating the blessings You have bestowed upon us.

Lord, grant us the strength to celebrate the successes of others, and to find joy in their achievements rather than harbouring bitterness. Teach us to see the beauty in our individuality and to embrace the gifts You’ve given us.

May Your grace help us to cultivate a spirit of love and support, allowing us to lift one another up. Replace our jealousy with compassion, and fill our hearts with peace.

Thank You for Your unwavering love, which fosters understanding and unity. In Your name, we pray.

Amen.
