BY EFFIE DEANS It’s now around 13 years since we last had a Labour Government. People in their twenties will barely remember it. In Scotland too we have had SNP Government since 2007. The days when Labour and the Lib Dems were in coalition are a distant memory even for those of us who do remember. Change is coming in both the UK and in … Continue reading The SNP Can Now be Decisively Defeated
BY HAMISH GOBSON Even the Archers’ lesbian kiss would be subject to Yousaf’s Legal Services Bill Our anti-affordable “government” in Scotland has been conspicuous by its silence in the matter of the first lesbian kiss to be broadcast on The Archers, the celebrated radio series which has been telling “an everyday story of countryfolk” since 1951. This happened on 10 August yet Humza Yousaf, who has … Continue reading Thongweed & Lugworms
BY EFFIE DEANS Penny Mordaunt’s appearance at the Fringe in Edinburgh proved controversial for her statement that the SNP’s approach to independence fails because it is based on bile and hatred. But who does the SNP hate? The answer would seem obvious. England. The English. But both the SNP and its supporters deny this vehemently. There are two main hatreds in Scotland. Anglophobia and Sectarianism. … Continue reading Is the SNP motivated by Anglophobia?
BY HAMISH GOBSON Hamish Gobson’s diary: the view from across the Uisge AFFORDABLE GOVERNMENT will never come to Scotland so long as our leaders are carpet-baggers. While I was out on the rocks this spring quietly cutting fronds for political fortune-telling purposes, the Herald tells me that High-end Humza was gadding off to London for seditious purposes (talking to the EU Ambassador to the UK, for example) at … Continue reading Like Mrs Murrell, High-End Humza Eats the Taxpayer
BY HAMISH GOBSON The death of the Unabomber last month may have been eclipsed in the Scottish media by stories such as Mrs Murrell’s success in her driving theory test, or squibs like her recent trip to the police offices, but out here on Great Todday we hold fast to traditional news values. “Is modern society fit for purpose?” has always seemed more important than “Is Mrs … Continue reading Mrs Murrell Analysed from the Unabomber’s Chair
BY EFFIE DEANS There is always going to be a problem with the predictability of the future. I think it is for this reason that the SNP can essentially say what it likes about Scottish independence. It will give us each an extra £500 pounds assuming we don’t have to join the Euro. It will give us free travel throughout the former UK and the … Continue reading Beer & Thistles
BY HAMISH GOBSON In Culloden month this year, Mike Nevin published an excellent and informed article analysing Evgeny Prigozhin’s future march on Moscow under the title: “Why the Jacobite Rebellion Failed”. What Mr Nevin seemed to me to be saying by Aesopian analogy was that Humza Yousaf does not have the legs for a march as far as Derby, which Bonnie Prince Charlie reached, much less to … Continue reading The Upkilting of Humza
BY EFFIE DEANS With Labour closing the gap with the SNP to three points there is a real prospect of Scottish nationalism facing a God is dead moment. When Nietzsche wrote about the mortality of God, he was not of course suggesting that God had been alive and had then died. Rather he was saying that God had become a dead issue like believing in … Continue reading Mhairi Black is the Reason the SNP Just Died
BY HAMISH GOBSON Ian Mitchell’s recent book about Nicola Sturgeon (see below) concentrates on what he calls her “political personality”. This, to me, is another word for “character” in a public context. Anyone seeking to bet on how much longer Sturgeon would remain in Bute House could have done worse than to study the way she walks. This was one useful fact I derived from … Continue reading Be Prepared!
BY EFFIE DEANS The likely result of the next General Election in Scotland is that the SNP will lose around 20 seats to Labour and a few to the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. If that happens the SNP might still just be the largest party in Scotland on around 25 seats, but it will no longer be the dominant force. Alex Salmond has come … Continue reading The SNP Should Ditch Sturgeon
BY EFFIE DEANS It is terribly important both for the world and for Joe Biden that he ceases to be president when his term ends. It is cruel and unusual punishment that a man obviously suffering from dementia should be expected to do any more than relax at home. It is dangerous that such a man is president when the world faces a serious threat … Continue reading No Sex Please, We’re Scottish
BY EFFIE DEANS There were two moments when the SNP might have won independence. Alex Salmond had a chance in 2014 and Nicola Sturgeon had a chance in 2016. On both occasions Scotland might have ended up with a leader who would later be questioned on his or her honesty. The reason that the Scottish Government is minded to remove jury trials from rape cases … Continue reading Scotland’s Near Misses
BY EFFIE DEANS We all must take seriously the warning from Police Scotland not to discuss people who have been arrested. As soon as this happens such persons become unpersons. Their names may not be mentioned like יהוה [YHWH] in the Bible. We mustn’t put in the vowels, so that in time we even forget whether it was Potur Marrol or Pator Merril. Better just … Continue reading S(teal) N(ick) P(inch) Unmentionables
BY EFFIE DEANS How should one take advantage of the series of scandals that are beginning to overwhelm the SNP? Sit back and watch. Don’t get too excited. There are no doubt more to come. Look forward for the first time in a decade to the next General Election but don’t make a fool of yourself by saying too much. There are two factors that … Continue reading Have SNP Hopes Been Towed Away Too?
BY EFFIE DEANS The SNP is not a normal party. It is this that explains recent events and also events in the recent past. The SNP is the means by which Scottish nationalists hope to achieve independence. This explains everything. Of course, there are other Scottish nationalist parties. Alba, the Scottish Greens, some small far left socialist parties. Not every independence supporter likes the SNP. … Continue reading The SNP is Descending into Hell
BY PAUL T HORGAN It is usually crass to compare something in modern life to the Nazi Party. And yet its parallels with the SNP are compelling. The SNP, or rather the National Scottishist Damning Anglos Party, has followed the Bohemian Corporal’s playbook ever since it took power in 2007, and certainly since Nicola Sturgeon became Leader. Firstly, the SNP is a blatantly nationalist party, … Continue reading The Rise & Fall of the National Scottishists
BY EFFIE DEANS The SNP argument has always depended on the idea that it is undemocratic if Scotland votes to Remain in the EU, but the UK as a whole votes to Leave. It is the same argument when the UK as a whole votes for a Tory Government, but Scotland votes Labour or the SNP. Of course, there is nothing undemocratic in a part … Continue reading Both Rejoin & SNP Arguments in Tatters
BY EFFIE DEANS All through the years when there was a Labour Liberal coalition running Scotland, I was never remotely tempted to write about it. I had opposed devolution, but it didn’t matter very much to me that there was Scottish Executive that was in charge of some things. I paid it no attention whatsoever. What made me start writing was Alex Salmond gaining a … Continue reading An End to Interesting Times
BY BERT BURNETT This is a picture put up by the Cairngorms National Park. Beautiful isn’t it? But what this photograph fails to reveal is that this is what the area looked like before the Park Authorities took over. It’s looked like this for decades if not longer, thanks to the management that was in place before not the management that we have now. Such … Continue reading Real or a Postcard?
BY EFFIE DEANS From the Pro UK perspective, it is blindingly obvious that we ought to hope that Humza Yousaf becomes SNP leader and First Minister. Yet he is the establishment candidate backed by Sturgeon and almost everyone else of significance in the SNP. It’s hard to see why? The SNP is an overwhelmingly white party, and most members could if they wished trace their … Continue reading Pro UK = Pro Yousaf
