Bryn Parry OBE (1956–2023) was a celebrated countryside cartoonist renowned for his humorous and insightful depictions of rural life in Britain. As a mischievous schoolboy, he often doodled in the margins of his textbooks, and his talent for drawing blossomed during his time in the army, where he began to envision turning his sketches into a profession. Parry’s work resonates deeply with anyone passionate about the countryside, particularly those with an interest in shooting and the antics of poorly behaved dogs.

His witty, detailed, and perceptive cartoons graced the pages of various country magazines and adorned countless products, making him a household name among outdoor enthusiasts. Among his bestselling titles are Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Shooting Types, Horses for Courses, Sex in the Country, and 101 Shooting Excuses, as well as Home on the Range, co-authored with his wife, Emma. In addition to his artistic contributions, Bryn and Emma co-founded the Help for Heroes foundation in 2007, raising funds for wounded soldiers.
This re-issue of Mad Dogs and Englishmen is a delightful collection of Parry’s cartoons focused on shooting and canine companions. It offers a humorous yet poignant insight into a world that transcends mere sport, revealing a rural lifestyle cherished by those who live it. Through Bryn Parry’s keen observations and playful illustrations, readers are invited into a vibrant depiction of country life that captures the spirit and camaraderie of those who embrace it.
