A Prayer for Flood Victims

VICAR

Dear Readers of Country Squire Magazine, I trust that You and Your families are well, dry and happy this Sunday morning. As Storm Dennis bears down on us, this week I’d like to pray for the victims of the storms and in particular those suffering flood damage. There are one hundred flood warnings across the country as I write this Sunday morning.

Two people had to be rescued after their car was swept off the road in the Scottish Borders. In West Yorkshire the Army has been helping residents shore up flood defences, a week after they were hit by Storm Ciara. The Environment Agency has warned flooding could be worse than Ciara because of the saturated ground. Last weekend’s storm caused hundreds of homes to be flooded and left more than 500,000 people without power.

Having to experience a flood is grim. I feel for those families who are affected. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Such events teach us the awesome power of nature and that one’s belongings are only temporary. They also make us fear the dangers that face our families and the risks of just being alive. Floods can be massive setbacks for families, affecting the day-to-day confidence of children in particular, who previously thought their existence resistant to everything and everyone.

I wish You all a peaceful and safe Sunday. I trust that Your week ahead is a good one and full of progress and learning. If You are affected by the weather, I pray for You. God Bless.

Compassionate God, source of all comfort,
We pray for the people whose lives have devastated by rain and flood.
Bring them comfort, we pray.
Protect the vulnerable. Strengthen the weak.
Have mercy on all those working to rescue the stranded .
And may our response to their suffering be generous and bring you praise.
For we ask it in Jesus’ name,
Amen.
