Activists Not Journalists

So Sir Nick Clegg has confirmed what we all knew. Clegg has confirmed there is “absolutely no evidence” Russia influenced the Brexit result using Facebook. The former Deputy PM told the BBC that Facebook had carried out analyses of its data and found no “significant attempt” by outside forces to sway the vote. Instead, he argued that “the roots to British euroscepticism go very deep”. Even more damning for the merchants of conspiracy theory – in the interview, Sir Nick dismissed claims that data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica influenced people’s decision to vote Leave in the EU referendum in 2016.

So, there we have it. If an arch remainer like Clegg denies Russian involvement in the Brexit vote then we know that there was no Russian involvement. The British People voted by themselves to leave the EU and that is their democratic will which must be enacted.

How can the likes of Carole Cadwalladr sleep at night?

Just yesterday 2+2=7 Cadwalladr and her deluded trolls were in a tizz about Boris Johnson having breakfast with a conservative. Can you imagine a conservative actually having breakfast with a conservative? The mind boggles.

In this case, the breakfast was with Steve Bannon, who served as White House Chief Strategist in the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump during the first seven months of Trump’s term. So what if Boris had breakfast with Bannon? If the US President saw fit to appoint Bannon to such an elevated position then surely any conservative would be interested in having breakfast with Bannon. Many have – in fact breakfasts with Bannon are relatively commonplace amongst conservative circles.

Why the constant conspiracies?

You see, the likes of Cadwalladr are not journalists. They are activists. They are happy to swan around the Frontline Club and attend wacky festivals like the Byline Festival in Sussex claiming to be journalists but in fact these people are cranks. They are the modern equivalent of the green ink brigade enabled by the Web and dying newspapers like the Guardian; propped up by an offshore trust their “values” are opposite to; resorting to Twitter because that is the only outlet through which they can find enough sheep to herd and sufficient conspiracy cranks to titillate; all the while inextricably bogged down by the reality of their multiple hypocrisies. Facts are less relevant to these people than the titillation – thinking they are the people’s champion when in fact they are the false prophets of the poundshop.

Their public apologies are inevitable. Cadwalladr is forever apologising publicly for her errors – it’s surprising the Guardian has not sacked her. The likes of her are only interested in talking about alleged Leave overspending – not the overwhelming evidence of much greater Remain overspending. She’s an activist. She is most often joined in her apologies by tinfoil hat conspiracists like Peter Jukes, who once suggested that the Momentum agitators at the Rees-Mogg event in Bristol last year were actually right-wing impostors, that the fracas was staged and that Jacob Rees-Mogg was in on it. There was some hilarity when Jukes was fined by a regulator set up by the former fascist Max Mosley, which no self-respecting publication will ever associate with.

There should be far greater punishments for these deliverers of fake news and conspiracy. The newspaper(s) that carry their fabrications ought to be seriously fined. What if a child read their drivel? How would that child grow up sane believing increasingly deranged conspiracy theories that would “make David Icke think twice”?

These people are handless clocks. At least a stopped clock with hands is correct twice a day.

So where is their apology today?

It will not come. They will find a reason for Clegg to have lied, where there is none. Instead let us make clear, these activists – not journalists – are liars, and, for the sakes of truth and justice, they should be shunned.

“Telling one lie begets another lie that begets another lie and before you know it that lie has grandkids, great grandkids and keeps growing. It’s like Lay’s Potato Chips, you can’t tell just one!”
