VICAR
Dear Readers of Country Squire Magazine, I trust this letter finds you watching the days lengthen and the first faint stirrings of life return to the hedgerows.
March is a month of contradictions. It arrives with the promise of spring, yet it often bites with the teeth of winter. It is a time of hope, but also of impatience. The land is waking, but slowly, and we are reminded that some things—the best things—cannot be hurried. Let us, therefore, offer a prayer for this turning of the year, for patience in the waiting, and for eyes to see the quiet miracles of renewal.
Almighty God, who in the beginning brought light out of darkness and order out of chaos, we praise Thee for the unfolding miracle of spring. We thank Thee for the lengthening days, for the pale March sun that warms the soil, and for the first brave daffodils nodding in the chilly breeze. In a world that clamours for instant results and immediate gratification, teach us the ancient wisdom of patience. We pray for the land in this tender time. Bless the emerging shoots, the swelling buds, and the birds beginning to build their nests. Protect the early lambs from the cruel snap of frost and the bitter wind. Grant wisdom to the shepherd and the farmer, who watch the skies with anxious hope, knowing that their labour depends not on their own strength alone, but on Thy merciful provision. Give them calm hearts and steady hands as they tend to the first fruits of the new season. We confess, Lord, that we are often like March itself—changeable and restless. One day we are full of hope; the next, we are cast down by a late snow or a lingering chill. Root out from our hearts the impatience that frets against Thy timing. Remind us that Thou art the God of the slow growth and the hidden work, the One who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows, and who will surely complete the good work begun in us. We pray for all those who find this season difficult. For those who struggle with the lingering darkness of the soul, even as the physical light returns. For those who wait upon news, upon healing, upon reconciliation. Grant them the hope that comes from knowing that winter does not last forever, and that after the long night, the dawn always comes. Be near to the lonely, the anxious, and the heavy-laden, and whisper to their hearts the promise of renewal. As we prepare the ground for planting, both in our fields and in our lives, grant us the wisdom to sow good seed. Let us plant kindness where there has been strife, patience where there has been haste, and hope where there has been despair. Help us to trust the process, to tend the soil of our own hearts with care, and to wait in faith for the harvest Thou wilt bring. We pray for our rural communities, that they might be places of mutual support in this busy season. Give us eyes to see a neighbour’s need and the willingness to lend a hand, whether with lambing, with mending, or simply with a warm cup of tea and a word of encouragement. Let the fellowship of the countryside be a reflection of Thy love. And in all things, teach us to rejoice in the present moment, even as we look forward to the fullness of spring. Give us grateful hearts for the beauty of the bare branch, the clean lines of the ploughed field, and the stark majesty of the hills before they are clothed in green. For every season is a gift from Thy hand, and in every season, Thou art with us. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in whom all things are made new. Amen.
Have a peaceful Sunday and a blessed March week, full of the quiet hope of the turning year.
God bless you all.
